What is the ECES Student Server?

The ECES Student Server is a Unix computer owned and operated by the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The ECES Student Server is generally accessed in two ways:

As a Windows Server From Within ECEE Teaching Labs
ECES acts as a file server for the Windows 7 and Windows XP computers in the ECEE Teaching Labs.

Your must have an account on ECES to access these Windows computers, and your home directory is mounted as the Z: drive on these computers.

For some courses, shared project directories on ECES are also available.

As a Unix Server From Anywhere
ECES is accessible from anywhere on the internet, including the ECEE Teaching Labs, as eces.colorado.edu. As a Unix server, eces.colorado.edu is accessilbe via SSH. File transfers can be performed via SCP.

For commandline access you can SSH directly to eces-shell.colorado.edu

Why would I need an account on the ECES Student Server?

Anyone currently registered for a course which requires use of an ECEE Teaching Lab must obtain an ECES account.

An ECES account login and password is required to access any computer in an ECEE Teaching Lab. Your ECES account will also provide you with a place to store data while working in the ECEE Teaching Labs and will provide you with access to this data from inside and outside of the labs.

An ECES account login and password is also required to access the computers in the ECEE Student Resource Center.

Who can get an account on the ECES Student Server?

University of Colorado Undergraduates majoring in ECEE, graduate students in the ECEE Department, and ECEE Faculty are all elligible to maintain an account on the ECES Student Server for the duration of their affiliation with the department.

Additionally, any students registered for a CU or CU Continuing Education course requiring them to use an ECEE Teaching Lab are eligible to maintain an account on the ECES Student Server for the durration of their enrollment in that course.

How do I get and use an account on the ECES Student Server?

If you are an ECEE undergraduate or graduate student or are currently registered for a course which uses an ECEE Teaching Lab, please refer to the ECES Policies page and the Getting Started page to find out about creating and using your ECES account.

How do I get physical access to a lab?

Physical access to labs outside of normal hours will be provided by your BuffOne card.

Access to specific labs is determined by enrollment.

If you require access to a lab other than those granted based on your current enrollment, you must have an ECEE faculty member email a request to the ECEE Front Desk: ecefd@colorado.edu

Access to labs should be granted by Monday, September 3.

If you do not have physical access to a lab you need AFTER MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, you should bring your BuffOne card to the ECEE FRONT DESK in ECEE 1B55.

The front desk hours are 9am-12pm and 1pm-5pm Monday - Friday.
