Resetting Your Windows NT Roaming Profile
What is a Windows NT Roaming Profile?
Your Windows NT Roaming Profile consists of a few files that reside on ECES is in a directory space outside of your home directory.
When you log on to an ECE Undergrad Lab Windows computer, this profile is downloaded from ECES to the Windows client. When you log off of the Windows client, the profile is uploaded back to ECES.
The profile contains personal settings such as your desktop background, some application preferences, and some Windows environment variables.
Your profile does NOT include files saved on your desktop or files saved in your My Documents folder. In fact your profile directory does not contain any user data files at all.
Over time, or due to use and/or changes in certain software used in the labs, your Windows NT Roaming Profile can become corrupted. In this case, the easiest and most effective solution is to simply delete your profile and create a new one.
When to Delete Your Windows NT Roaming Profile?
The most prevalent problems solved by deleting your Windows NT Roaming Profile are:
- You receive an error when trying to run Altium Protel in the ECE Capstone Lab. This appears to be an artifact of upgrading the machines from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.
- You cannot use or add any ECE Undergrad Lab printers.
- When you log on to a Windows machine, you receive an error stating that your profile is unavailable or corrupted.
