Quick Instructions
for a home system setup
NOTE:
These instructions are for Toranado 2.2, please use Zach's
Home setup instructions for Tornado 2.02
- Create a new folder
called bootutils
(or of some other name of your liking) on your hard drive [usually C:\]
and download all the boot utilities from the following link:
http://ece-www.colorado.edu/~siewerts/ecen/vxw/vxboot/bootutils/
- Download the file bootrom.sys
in the same folder [c:\bootutils] from the following link
http://ece.colorado.edu/~siewerts/ecen/vxw/vxboot/kernels/wind/
- Quick format a floppy drive, which can be done by
right clicking on the floppy in windows explorer.

4.
Now from the start menu, open up a cmd prompt, and go
to the bootutils
directory.

- Type in: mkboot a: bootrom.sys
and that should create the boot disk required.
- Download the two
kernels vxWorks.rtesp_p3 & vxWorks.rtesp
to your hard drive [I have ‘em in
c:\vxworks\kernels\] from the following link.
http://ece.colorado.edu/~siewerts/ecen/vxw/vxboot/kernels/wind/
Note: It is suggested that you put the kernels in
the directory you have setup for the ftp user. For more info
check the ‘Tips & Notes’ section below. Also, you can change the
names of these kernels to whatever you like. For most machines the vxWorks.rtesp_p3 should work, but for
some take home targets (hopefully very few) vxWorks.rtesp is the right kernel.
- Boot up your home
target system with the floppy you just made. Notice that it comes up with V1.6 loader. When the [vxWorks
boot] options show up, press enter to change the parameters according
to your home setup.
- Among the parameters,
you should not have to change:
- Boot device [should already be set to elt]
- Unit number [should already be set to 0]
- Processor number
[should already be set to 0]
- Change the following:
- Host Name [optional, Name of your computer]
- File Name [required, file where you
downloaded the kernels in step 6]
- Inet on Ethernet (e) [required, the ip
you want to give your target]
- Host inet [required,
ip address of your computer]
- User: [required, user name you have
setup for your Tornado FTP server]
- ftp password: [required, password of the user of
the FTP server]
- target name: [optional but recommended, name you
want to give your target]
- flags: [required, should already be set
to 0, but just make sure]
Tips & Notes:
- The v1.6 loader allows
you to save your vxWorks boot parameters, so you
don’t have to create a new boot disk every time you need to change the
parameters or power cycle the target.
- To clear any field in
the vxWorks boot parameter, press “.” [without
quotes, D’uh]
- To go back a field in
the boot parameters, enter “-“
- In case you didn’t
know, the FTP server used in step 6 comes with the Tornado Install and
must be running in order to download the code. You can start it through Start > Programs > Tornado2.0.2
> Ftp Server
- For the FTP server user
settings [click menu Security >
User Rights] it is advised that you restrict the user to home
(directory/folder), though it is not necessary at all.

- In the boot settings,
the field ‘file name’ looks for
the kernel file in the ‘Home Directory’ (set in the above picture as
c:\vxworks).
- It is highly
recommended that you turn on the FTP log by selecting the menu Logging > Log Options & then
selecting the desired boxes.
- If you have any
firewall running on your host machine, it might cause your FTP to not work
properly.
